In a world increasingly driven by data, one man is helping Hawke’s Bay businesses harness analytics to make smarter decisions and unlock new growth opportunities.
Rob Sickorez, a former U.S. Air Force operations research analyst has advanced degrees in mathematical and statistical sciences and doctorate-level expertise. Rob provides Hawke’s Bay businesses with customised data solutions that are transforming local operations and boosting productivity.
Rob’s journey to New Zealand was anything but typical. After a distinguished career in the U.S. military, where he pioneered models for optimising officer assignments, followed by over
a decade working in the private sector, Rob and his wife, consultant psychiatrist Dr Katie Sickorez, decided it was time for a change.
Seeking a lifestyle shift from the bustling cities of Texas, they made the move to the Hawke’s Bay attracted by its scale, climate, and warm, welcoming vibe.
“When we visited Hawke’s Bay, we knew it was where we wanted to call home,” Rob shares.
The move was a leap of faith, unlike his Air Force days where he relied on data models to make precise, impactful decisions. Here, the decision was guided by their values and desire for a new adventure, “it was a bit like flying the airplane while you build it—exciting, a bit scary, but full of potential.”
Once settled, Rob quickly identified an opportunity to apply his expertise to local businesses. Initially he worked for a U.S.-based firm as chief data scientist, shifting to data analysis at the NZ Ministry for the Environment, where he transformed MfE’s rudimentary data sets into interactive dashboards tracking waste and emissions. He then set up Growth Mindset, to bring advanced data solutions directly to New Zealand businesses.
“I realised that many small and medium businesses here had data but weren’t always sure how to use it strategically,” Rob explains.
Today Rob offers data analytics services tailored to each client’s unique needs. One example of his work was with one of New Zealand’s largest fruit producers, who experienced costly downtimes during product transitions. Rob used the company’s historical data to develop a predictive model and optimisation framework that allowed them to streamline packing decisions. “The time savings were significant. It helped them reduce downtime and make more informed decisions based on real-time data.”
Beyond agriculture, Rob’s expertise extends across multiple sectors, including retail, financial services, marketing, transportation and logistics.
One key aspect of Rob’s success has been his commitment to translating complex data insights into accessible, actionable information. He acknowledges that many businesses, especially those new to data science, feel intimidated by its technical aspects.
“Businesses all have data, but they’re not always certain how best to use it in day-to-day decisions,” he says.
“My role is to understand their specific challenges, and develop custom solutions that deliver results.” Many companies already pay subscription fees for products like Xero, MYOB, or customer relationship management applications, and may not even realise how much valuable data they already have.
Growth Mindset taps into that data to drive immediate cost savings or improve profits, for small and large businesses alike – all available here in HB. Rob says the potential for data-driven solutions in HB is enormous, especially as the region continues to evolve.
“Data can be the foundation for informed, strategic decisions that will shape our future,” he says. “Whether it’s optimising our limited water resources, enhancing the performance of local industries, or fostering vibrant communities, data will be integral to making our shared vision a reality.” Rob is excited by the prospects that lie ahead for his business and the region.
“Hawke’s Bay is at a stage where data driven solutions can elevate businesses, creating a model for how innovative communities across New Zealand can make a big impact.
By navigating complex challenges with precision and insight, businesses here are setting the stage for broader transformation.”
“For a long time, this level of data science was the domain of large corporations. But now, with scalable technology and tailored solutions, even smaller businesses can see big benefits.” Rob is not only passionate about helping businesses thrive but also grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that values progress and innovation. “It’s inspiring to see how open and forward-thinking Hawke’s Bay businesses are about data,” he shares.
