Dave’s passion for the travel industry stems not from a desire to see the world but from a love of people and sales. Originally from Wigan, UK, he moved
to Hawke’s Bay in 2003, drawn to the region’s vibrant community and relaxed lifestyle. He quickly found his footing in the travel sector, working for two of New Zealand’s largest agencies over an 18-year period. “I’ve always loved sales,” Dave says.
“For me, it wasn’t about chasing numbers. It was about building relationships, understanding client needs, and delivering experiences that exceeded expectations.”
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Dave’s career — and the entire travel industry — in ways no one could have anticipated. With international borders closed, the once-thriving sector ground to a halt, leaving Dave to navigate a deluge of cancellations, refunds, and credits on behalf of clients. As travel came to a standstill, he had to reassess his future, taking on roles outside the industry, including pizza delivery and a full-time job with insurance provider AIG, to make ends meet.
“It grounded me massively,” Dave reflects. “I went from enjoying the high life of the travel business to scraping the barrel. But it was a humbling experience that taught me resilience and adaptability.”
During this period of upheaval, Dave re-evaluated his career and realised the traditional travel agency model was evolving. Spotting an opportunity, he launched his own travel brokerage in 2021, offering clients a more personalised, flexible approach to travel planning. Operating independently, he has returned to the core values that drive his success: trust, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to his clients.
“I wanted to create a business that was built on relationships,” he says. “It’s not just about selling trips; it’s about crafting memories.”
Dave’s meticulous attention to detail has earned him a reputation as more than just a travel agent; he’s become a trusted advisor and, in his words, a ‘travel PA.’ His holistic approach ensures no aspect of a trip is overlooked — from booking flights and accommodation to organising tours, transfers, and travel insurance. “You have to stitch everything together,” he explains.
“It’s like mixing the perfect cocktail — each element must work harmoniously to create something truly special.” His dedication has not gone unnoticed. Within the New Zealand Travel Brokers network, Dave was named ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2023 and earned the title of second-best travel agent in the network in 2024.
His growing client base is a testament to his ability to deliver seamless, stress-free travel experiences. Around 40% of Dave’s business now comes from corporate clients, helping local businesses arrange travel for conferences, meetings, and sales trips. By positioning himself as an extension of his clients’ teams, he provides a level of service that goes beyond simply booking travel. Balancing both leisure and corporate travel, Dave has built a resilient, well-rounded business. Reflecting on his journey, Dave is proud of how far he’s come and remains humble about the challenges he’s faced.
The pandemic tested his resilience but also gave him the chance to reinvent himself and build a business that aligns with his values. “It’s been a rollercoaster, but I wouldn’t change a thing,” he says.
